Pochita's Sacrifice
A small dog's heart beats forever within a broken boy.
This pivotal event marks the tragic origin of Denji’s transformation into a hybrid, born from betrayal and an act of profound love. After being killed by the yakuza in a deal with the Zombie Devil, Denji is revived when Pochita merges his body with the boy's. This fusion grants Denji the ability to transform parts of his body into chainsaws by pulling a cord in his chest. The act was conditional: Pochita demanded that Denji live a humble, ordinary life in return for this second chance. What began as a debt collection gone wrong became a supernatural rebirth that altered the balance between Devils and humanity.

Lore & Background
In an alternate late-1990s timeline where the Soviet Union still exists, Devils are born from collective human fears. Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil, possesses a unique power: consuming another Devil permanently erases that concept from existence and memory. When Denji was betrayed by the yakuza and killed by the Zombie Devil, Pochita did not simply fight back; he merged with the deceased teenager. This created a hybrid capable of restarting its own heart via a pull cord in the chest. The resulting being, Chainsaw Man, would later become central to the war against Makima, the Control Devil, whose goal was to dominate Pochita to erase fears from existence.
In Their Own Story
Denji, an impoverished teenager working as a Devil Hunter to pay off his father's debt, was betrayed by the yakuza and killed alongside Pochita. As blood pooled on the concrete floor of an abandoned site, Pochita merged with Denji’s dying body. The small dog-like devil used his chainsaw abilities to revive Denji as a hybrid on one condition: that Denji live a humble life. When the cord in Denji's chest was pulled, he transformed into Chainsaw Man, tearing through the Zombie Devil and the yakuza members who had killed him. This resurrection set Denji on a path toward the Public Safety Division, where he would eventually face Makima, Aki Hayakawa, and Power.
Reader's Guide
Denji lived in poverty with his father, owing money to loan sharks. The father's gambling debts led him to betray both himself and Denji to the yakuza. Cornered during a stormy night, Denji was shot dead by a deal involving the Zombie Devil. Pochita refused to let this be the end; he merged with Denji’s corpse, granting him a chainsaw heart that could restart life itself. To activate his transformation, Denji must pull a cord in his chest, turning parts of his body into blades. This fusion bound them forever, creating a hybrid who later joined the Public Safety Devil Hunters to hunt Devils like the Gun Devil and the Control Devil.
