Lore & Background
In this world, Devils are born from collective human fears and grow stronger as those fears spread. The Gun Devil represents the primal dread of firearms, a fear that has shaped global conflict for centuries. Devils follow a reincarnation cycle: dying on Earth sends them to Hell, where they can be killed again to return to Earth. However, the Chainsaw Devil breaks this cycle by permanently erasing the concepts it consumes from existence and memory. The Gun Devil was deployed by the United States specifically to eliminate Makima, who is later revealed to be the Control Devil seeking to dominate Pochita. A Devil possessing a human body becomes a Fiend; in a twist of fate, the defeated Gun Devil is forced to possess Aki Hayakawa, transforming him into the Gun Fiend.

Denji is recruited by Public Safety under Makima's command to hunt the Gun Devil. He is partnered with the experienced Aki Hayakawa and Power, a Fiend created from the Blood Devil. As the arc unfolds, it is revealed that Makima is actually the Control Devil, whose true goal is to dominate Pochita due to his ability to erase fears by consuming Devils. The United States deploys the Gun Devil against her, but Makima defeats it and forces it to possess Aki as the Gun Fiend. Denji is forced to kill his friend in self-defense. Later, Makima kills Power in front of Denji, breaking him emotionally until Pochita takes control. Denji eventually recovers enough to kill Makima, after which he is entrusted with Nayuta, the reincarnation of the Control Devil.
